Warren McClaskey has been open as an adult center since September 1978.  Classes for adults with disabilities and older adults are held in a variety of locations throughout the school district.

The McClaskey Center is unique in that it offers programs and classes for students conducted in a variety of locations throughout the school district boundaries. Program offerings are designed for adults with developmental disabilities, older adults, and parents or adults assuming a parenting role.  Classes Offered

    

Adults with Developmental Disabilities

The mission of this program is to enhance life opportunities and choices of adults with developmental disabilities by nurturing within the individual an increasing and broadening sense of independence and personal fulfillment; empowering the individual to reach her or his maximum potential; developing human potential through integrated life opportunities; and providing high quality services that enable full community inclusion. The major focus of this program is to offer life skills training which emphasizes achievement of greater independence and a less restrictive lifestyle. Instruction is individualized, competency-based, age appropriate, and to the fullest extent possible takes place in the natural environment of the community. Classes fall into several skill categories such as community access, employment exploration, independent living, job preparation, leisure time, production occupation work and socialization.

Older Adults    

The mission of this program is to enhance life opportunities and choices of older adults by encouraging lifelong learning, expanding horizons, improving quality of life, and giving purpose so as to extend life. A variety of classes are available for older adults at McClaskey and in activity centers and resident centers throughout the school district. Offerings are designed to foster life-long education through opportunities for personal growth and development, community involvement, survival skills, and economic self-sufficiency. Classes taught include fine and applied art; sewing, pattern design and alterations; understanding and using technology (PC and MacIntosh); and upholstering (basic techniques).
