During
the 1960's, losses incurred by school districts nationwide, resulting
from vandalism, burglaries, theft and arson increased markedly.
Municipal Police Agencies found themselves unable to keep up with the
demands for their services. As a result, some school districts found
it necessary to develop their own police or security forces. The
Sacramento City Unified School District formed the nucleus of a school
district security force in September, 1968.
The School Resource Officer Program of
the Sacramento Police Department and the Sacramento Sheriff's
Department in cooperation with school district principals, assistant
principals, and district administrators has been very effective in
dealing with problems on our campuses. As a result, major disruptions
have been kept to a minimum. School Resource Officers selected for
this duty have done much to improve the image of the uniformed officer
in the eyes of students, parents, and staff. If our school district is
to continue to have safe and secure campuses, it is imperative that
our outstanding relationship with the Sacramento Police and Sacramento
Sheriff's Department be continued and strengthened.
Our years of experience in the area
of school policing and security have provided us with sufficient
knowledge to work with students, parents, employees, and the community
in our efforts of crime prevention on our school campuses.
A low-key approach directed at
prevention rather than apprehension, and involving the total community
helps toward providing an orderly atmosphere on campus that is
conducive to maintaining the educational process. |
